This project will test a female specific HIV intervention which addresses women’s HIV risks as part of CJ-DATS. The overall goal of this project is to develop an HIV intervention for criminal justice involved female drug abusers who are re-entering the community. The project will develop the intervention manual using the literature as well as focus groups. In addition, the project will train/supervise interventionists, pilot the intervention in prison, refine the manual, and evaluate the intervention. The intervention will focus on reducing HIV behaviors among female prisoners by restructuring relationship thinking errors to help women make safer decisions about risky HIV related behaviors. The Restructuring Risky Relationships – HIV intervention will fill a void as a tailored HIV intervention for criminal justice involved female drug abusers who are re-entering the community. This project contributes to CJ-DATS by: (1) Examining the unique issues of female drug abusing prisoners and HIV; and (2) Developing an intervention for women at community re-entry to alter their HIV risk behaviors in the context of relationships. The following specific aims organize the project:
-
Develop the RRR-HIV intervention manual which incorporates relationships, thinking errors, and HIV related risky behaviors.
-
Pilot the RRR-HIV intervention to examine the content and feasibility of delivery.
-
Evaluate the intervention manual using an experimental two group design.
